O2 Launches O2 Satellite for Business

O2 Business has launched O2 Satellite for Business, becoming the first UK mobile network to offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity specifically for business customers. The service is designed to extend connectivity into areas beyond the reach of traditional mobile networks.

The service works automatically when compatible smartphones move outside O2’s conventional mobile coverage, connecting directly to satellites without requiring additional hardware or a separate app. O2 says this extends its effective landmass coverage from 89% to 95%, providing greater connectivity for employees working in remote or harder-to-reach locations.

Users can access services including messaging, maps, weather information and location sharing through apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Google Maps, Apple Maps, BBC Weather and AllTrails. The service is supported on compatible Apple, Google and Samsung smartphones.

O2 Satellite for Business is included at no additional cost with O2 Business Ultimate mobile plans. Customers on Plus plans can add the service for £2.50 per month plus VAT, on a 30-day rolling basis.

The technology has also been tested in emergency situations. During a recent wildfire in Derbyshire, O2 provided 100 satellite-enabled phones to Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, allowing crews to maintain communications and share information in an area without traditional mobile coverage.

The launch highlights the growing role of direct-to-device satellite technology in extending mobile connectivity beyond conventional networks, particularly for businesses and organisations operating in rural, remote or challenging environments.
