Sky Extends SES Satellite Deal Into the Next Decade

Sky has extended its long-standing satellite capacity agreement with SES, ensuring its satellite TV services will continue across the UK and Republic of Ireland into the 2030s. The multi-year deal will allow Sky to continue using SES satellite capacity at the 28.2° East orbital position, reaching millions of households.

The partnership dates back to 1988 and comes as Sky continues to expand its internet-delivered services through Sky Glass and Sky Stream. However, satellite remains an important part of its distribution strategy, particularly for existing satellite TV customers.

The agreement extends the relationship beyond the previously disclosed 2029 timeframe, although the precise duration and financial value have not been revealed.

The deal highlights the continuing role of satellite alongside internet-based delivery, as broadcasters maintain reliable access to audiences while adapting to changing viewing habits.

CANAL+ has extended its satellite capacity partnership with SES through to 2040, securing long-term distribution across Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. The agreement will support the delivery of premium video content and pay-TV services to more than 40 million subscribers across 70 countries.

The partnership, which dates back to 1995, will continue to use SES satellite infrastructure across several orbital positions. However, the companies have not disclosed the financial value of the agreement or the specific satellites and capacity involved.

The extension highlights the continued importance of satellite distribution in reaching audiences across diverse markets, including areas where reliable broadband access may be limited.

The deal reinforces satellite’s role alongside streaming and internet-based services in supporting the future of television distribution.
